people typicaly think of an engagment ring as a solitare or a simple stone setting were as and anniversary ring (not engagment anniversary ring) is typicaly seen as a multi stone ring. but thats even up for debate engagment rings can be anything you want it to be 
i have an invisible setting 3 stone princess cut ring for my engagment ring and love it.

in my experience anniversary/commitment rings tend to be a duplicate or mirror image of the wedding band and the three rings are worn on the one finger with the wedding band closest to the palm, the engagement ring in the middle and the anniversary ring on the outside

some e-rings are sold as a set and come with a wedding band that fits with it. some bands are called enhancers or wraps and they actually snap on and off the e-ring. but you can also buy an e-ring on its own and then choose a band later.
I don't know how many of my friends picked out their ring but I think most of them had no hand in choosing it. Which I think is my fate, even tho I told my bf I don't want a ring.
